over 2 degrees plus or minus of center or
over 4 degrees total difference, I will typi-
cally use a double cardan driveshaft.
If the differential is pointing down, another
issue is that it will also bang against the
more delicate part of the differential, the
input area and the flange and driveshaft. It
is always nice for wheeling to have this area
pointing more upward. But with any lift, be
it with a leaf spring or a coil spring, caster
changes and needs to be fixed.
Good luck.

Engine Swap
Hello Robbie,
I am replacing a 1972 engine in an FJ40
with a newer engine (smogged model with
larger displacement). What is the proce-
dure? I want to put on a Rochester carburetor
(Man-a-Fre) and junk the smog. Best head-
ers? Do you have any helpful information?
Thanks.
Dave Dewey
Hello Dave:
I wish it were that simple. You will need to
look into the conversion requirements of your
local government. Here in Colorado, the
newer engine carries with it the sad fact that
it must have the emissions equipment of the
model year of the engine. For example, if I
take a 1985 FJ60 engine and transplant it
into a 1972 body, I need all the emissions
equipment for a 1985 on the engine when it
goes for an emissions test.
So what part of the country do you live
in? What are your local laws concerning
emissions?
I also want to let you know that legally I
cannot advise you to skirt the emissions laws
in this publication. I cannot advise you to
remove emissions equipment or tell you how
to remove these important pieces of equip-
ment. Even though I may not agree with
some of the laws, I need to follow them for
my professional protection.
Thanks.

80 Series Shifting Gremlins
Hello Robbie,
I've got a 1995 USA Land Cruiser with the
1FZFE and A343 transmission. Recently
it has started a strange shifting pattern.
Sometimes starting off, it would start in
2nd. I thought this was a problem with
the "Power, 2nd" switch but the next time I
used the truck, it began shifting back to 1st.
When I pull away from a stop, it would shift
to 2nd at 1,200 rpm, then third, then fourth.
It would shift so quickly that it would be in
fourth gear at 20 mph.
The other thing it's doing is shifting from 1 to
2, then back to 1, then back to 2 and back to
1 before finally commiting to gear 2. It would
also do this from 2 to 3 and from 3 to 4.
Being fairly experienced as a mechanic, I
started with the usual and replaced the trans-
mission filter, which was clean. Even the pan
was incredibly clean with very little friction
material in the pan. I adjusted the transmis-
sion cable per the FSM. Plugged in my
MAC mentor and checked for DTCs. There
were none. I can drive the truck and manu-
ally shift through the gears and it operates
fine and doesn't slip.
Next I purchased a new throttle position sen-
sor and adjusted it. The throttle seemed slug-
gish and after running the scan tool on data
stream, I notice the TPS would only read
55% at full throttle. After inspection, I noticed
the transmission cable was keeping the
throttle from opening all the way. The trans-
mission cable had to be completely loosened
to achieve full throttle, which seemed odd.
The throttle now opens all the way and the
TPS reads 90% at FT. Still no change in the
transmission, though.
Watching the scan tool while driving, I
see the gear change before the physical
change occurs. There's only a couple second
delay between each gear under any throttle
response. It shifts itself straight to 4th as quick-
ly as it can. I'm not sure where to go with my
Cruiser now, unless I drop it at the dealer.
Thanks.
Will Rasco
Hello Will:
I would check the engine wiring harness in
three locations. First is at the back of the
cylinder head where the harness goes past
the EGR pipe. Check to see if this harness is
sitting on the pipe or has the heat covering
burned off. This is a location that can create
lots of issues with the engine as well as the
transmission.
Next I would look under the intake manifold
at the back of the engine. This is where all
the connections to the wiring harness go
to the transmission. Look this area over for
coolant leaks getting into the connectors and
thus the fluid is grounding out the signals and
such, making the transmission shift oddly.
Next check the harness under the dash. You
may want to pull the glove box to look here.
If any of the wires going to the computer are
rubbing on any sharp metal brackets, this
also could be your issue.
You mention that the transmission had a filter.
The stock filter is a screen and typically can
just be inspected and put back in place, or
never even removed. If there was a filter type
of material in the transmission, it is aftermar-
ket. I prefer the screen, in that I like the filter
medium.
With how the TPS and the transmission are
acting, it sounds electrical and really could
be an issue in the harness.
Thanks.

Fuel Injection?
Hello Robbie:
I have a 1978 FJ40. I have a 2F engine
restored with a new carburetor. My mechan-
ic says add fuel injection, it's better in the
end due to gas corrosion on carburetors.
True or false?
Thanks.
Stacey Leach
Hello Stacy:
If this Cruiser were driven all the time, then I
would not worry about it. But if it sits for long
periods of time between being driven, then I
would agree.
The alcohol in the fuel is a bit corrosive but
the corrosion is not only a problem for carbu-
retors. It can be a problem for fuel injection
systems as well. The fuel injection systems
