I feel your pain. On my way to pick up a compression tester.
The compression test tells you only so much. Following Tim's advice/questions, I invested in a cylinder leak tester. That not only confirms the loss of sealing but it gives you a good idea of where the leak is going. In my case, the leak-down test showed most of the leak was going into the adjoining cylinder. When I pulled the head there was a clear indication of gasket failure between cylinders 4 and 5 and a nearby water passage in the head, which would account for the coolant showing up in the exhaust. Still, there could be a crack in the head, but we are keeping our fingers crossed that it's just the gasket. The engine never overheated, and there was no sign of oil/water mix.
