Okay, so I rebuilt the engine in my 1972 FJ55. It drove great for the first 500 miles after the rebuild with no issues. Drove it around town a lot and then took it for a 200-mile round-trip highway jaunt. Ran great. No problems. I was feeling really good about it, then all of a sudden on a short errand in town, I get a big puff of white smoke out of the tailpipe, then more white smoke. I check compression and there is a big drop in the number 4 and 5 cylinders (108 and 112 respectively vs. 140s for the rest of the cylinders). Plugs all look normal. So, what have I got, a blown head gasket after only 500 miles?! Cracked head?! The engine never overheated. If anything it ran cooler than normal. I've done head gaskets before, and I was really careful in torquing all the bolts, etc., when I assembled the engine. This is very frustrating to say the least. My wife is about to shoot me for spending so much time on the truck and it not being right.
