Frank, you basically have three options with the transmission. You can have
the transmission rebuilt to replace what seems to be a bad 3rd gear synchro,
you can buy another h55 and throw it in or you can buy a used 4 speed out of
a late 85, 86 or 87 60. Buying the 4 speed would be the cheapest, but you
would loose the overdrive and low first gear, both of which I love in my own
truck. Rebuilding the h55 you have wouldn't be too bad depending on whether
or not you have a shop do it. There is good documentation on the IH8MUD
forum for the rebuild if you choose to do it yourself. Finally, the new h55,
if there are any left in the country, would be the most expensive at around
$2500, last I checked.
