Frank:

I am sorry to have caused this whole rukus. I would not have posted my advice if I had not had positive experience with that particular, highly regarded, product. Not all gear oils are equal and really good ones are worth the money. From my experience and the experience of many who race with manual gearboxes the Redline MTL is the best gear lube money can buy. To be frank I have not had the same success with lesser synthetic and synthetic blend gear oils. The only manual gear box that I don't run MTL in is the Getrag 6 speed in my Supra. The Redline 75-90 hypoid gear oil is also great and now lubes all my diffs including the Supra. I have found that I get the best price at my local speed shop.

As I stated earlier it is not a permanent fix but the reduced friction may have a benefical enough effect on your 5 speed and make it useful for a while. The ST-205 GT-Four my wife drives would not shift smoothly or sometimes at all into first or third gear. The MTL not only got it shifting smoothly it is still operating fine. And yes it did stop my land cruiser from popping out of 5th for about 7 months. And yes I know it was worn out. I just ended up replacing it when the clutch finally started slipping and the disengaging returned also had a problem with the pilot bearing being seized. This resulted in my replacing the trans and transfer with a unit from Marv Specter, I also did away with the vacuum assist transfercase and when all mechanical on the floor for an extra $500. While I had it on my hoist I replaced the pins and shackles with greasable Aussie ones and used Wayne's spring upgrade with the *eep Rancho add a leafs. I used the long ones and got about 2"s
of lift. While waiting for parts I did the rad, rad and heater hoses and water pump just for good measure.

Using a vastly superior gear oil in an old transmission is not a sure thing, as I stated it is a gamble. If you do try it please let us know how it worked as my statements to its value have caused much strife. If it doesn't perform the desired magic don't throw it out, use it in the replacement transmission from the get go because it is the best gear oil that I have found. Redline is not some fly by night snake oil merchant check out the MTL webpage on the Redline site: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=45&pcid=7

I don't as yet use their engine oils as I can't get them for a decent price here and I have had such wonderful experience (I better not say luck) with Rotella T in my diesels.
