Gutentight. This isn't an application where precise torque is as important as tight enough not to leak, not so tight as to make a PITA for the poor soul who has to R&R after you do. I always assume the latter is me, and go on the light side. Mating surface prep is paramount. Make sure both sides are clean and bright prior to assembly!

OEM is paper. I like to smear a thin film of RTV on both sides of the paper gasket just so it isn't too much of a PITA to scrape it off for the next R&R if the poor soul is me. The RTV isn't so much to seal (although it doesn't hurt) as much as preventing the paper gasket from becoming one with the aluminum (water pump, t-stat, etc.) and the cast iron (head/block side).
Happy cruisin'!
