Gerrit,
I believe the '79 and up cowls are substantially different than '78 and earlier. I think they may even be wider overall, used different heaters, etc.
I would be extremely reluctant to attempt that mod.
I would be reluctant to cut up a new Pilgrim cowl and tub period. I would want to get the correct cowl for the year I ordered and let them manage the incorrect piece they sent you. I know you have said they are very active in working with you to resolve this, but in my mind, the only reason to order a new piece is to avoid having a bunch of patches on your original steel...

Subject: [LCML] More bulkhead mods
Hi all,
Just an update on my quest to put a later model cowl on the new body I got from Pilgrim restorations. I picked a donor cowl out of a '79 last weekend but its looking like the floor, body mounts and one of the kick panels are in too bad a shape to do a complete cowl replacement so I am back looking at doing a firewall graft. I was looking at the two firewalls and was thinking of replacing the entire firewall instead of a partial graft as Mark Whatley did in the trails article and previously discussed here. My thoughts were to drill the spot welds out along the top of the cowl and to the kick panels, grind off the welds where the firewall meets the angled floor and then swap out the entire firewall. My reasons for doing this are a super clean look (ok I admit it, I am a perfectionist) and because the 68 firewall I currently have is also missing the cutout and mounting for the heater blower.
Gerrit
